Happy International Dog Day
BackWhat better way to mark your friendship with man's best friend than by celebrating International Dog Day on 26th August. The Good Kennel Guide has made a guide to the best things to do to celebrate. Yes, our four legged friends should be celebrated every single day of the year (who needs an excuse?), but what's wrong with a little extra treat to make sure that their special day doesn't go un-recognised, especially in a year when our dogs have played such a major role in our mental and physical health and wellbeing.
COVID-19: How our dogs saved us during lockdown
International Dogs Day was created by an animal behavourist in 2004 as a way to honour our doggy friends. This also gives us the opportunity to highlight that there are many loving dogs out there that need homes or that do great jobs to help us humans every single day of the year.
How can I celebrate International Dog's Day with my dog?
-
Go for a long walk in a new place- take them to the beach or a forest
-
Have one of their dog chums over to play
-
Take them to the park to make new friends
-
Bake a dog friendly treat
-
Teach them a new trick (make sure that you reward them with lots of treats and cuddles!)
-
Take some fun photo portraits of your dog or have a go at painting or drawing them
-
Give your dog a personal pamper session by brushing them and giving them a massage
-
Tell them you love them and give them lots of affection
-
Buy them a new toy, collar or accessory
-
Do some research into the breed of your dog so that you can learn more about their background, likes and dislikes. A great example can be found for the Japanese Chin (and other breeds) on YourDogAdvisor.com

What can I do to support animal charities for International Dog's Day?
It's great to do lovely things with your own dog, but don't forget all of the dogs out there who need a home, or are being cared for in a shelter. Also if you dont have your own dog, that doesn't stop you from helping dogs in need or the charities that care for them. There is lots that you can do to help:
-
Donate to your local animal shelter or charity. Note that some charities are unable to take donated goods (toys and blankets) due to the coronavirus pandemic. Check their website to see how they can accept help at the current time.
-
Buy something on the Amazon Wish List for an animal charity. Many charities have their own Amazon Wish Lists which shows the items that they need, this is really lovely and personal way to donate.
-
Volunteer or donate to Hounds for Heroes who provide specially trained assistance dogs for disabled Armed Forces and Emergency Services personnel whose quality of life can be improved by a partnership with a dog.
