Teach your Dog Recall

Back

Most dogs love having off lead time and enjoy exploring a little further afield than a lead allows. This is only possible, however, if you can be certain that they will come back when called, no matter what the distraction,  if not, off lead time could turn into a disaster. Not only will it be very stressful for you but could be very dangerous should they get in amongst cattle or sheep, near a busy road etc.

The most important part of recall is making yourself more interesting than whatever it is your dog may be doing when you try to recall him. If he is enjoying chasing a squirrel and he knows that coming back to you is going to result in being told off, what is his motivation to choose you? The use of treats, games, praise and calling in a postive, happy voice will all add to your appeal.

Start by making sure your pooch knows his name, once his name gets his attention add in a recall command such as come, heel etc. Always stick to the same command and make sure the whole family uses the same one. Begin in the house and use high reward treats, you can then progress to the garden and begin to make the distances longer. You can also introduce clickers or dog whistles if you choose to. This is handy if you have more than one dog, rather than shouting names they will react to the one cue, or if your dog likes to explore a little further afield and may not hear your call.

Once you venture out into the big wide world start on a long lead until you are certain that they are still going to respond to your recall cue. Once you have got it cracked you wont need to treat everytime but don't punish or give your dog any reason to have a negative association with the command.

Always ensure that your dog is wearing a collar and ID tag and is chipped. A tag bearing the owners name and address is to be worn by law and can result in a fine of up to £2000 if not complied to but will also get your dog back to you quickly if for some reason they do bolt off.
