What beaches can I take my dog to in Cornwall and Devon?
As always, check tide times before visiting any beaches or coves. Here is our list of the best dog-friendly beaches in Devon and Cornwall. The information given was correct at the time of writing but please check before travelling for seasonal changes and Covid-19 restrictions.
Clovelly
Clovelly has a small pebble beach just below historic village, which remains car-free. Apart from the picturesque village, a major draw to Clovelly is the diverse marine wildlife to be found in the bay, which is particularly good for snorkelling. To access the beach visitors are required to park at the top of the village and walk down the steep, cobbled streets. For less mobile guests there is a Land Rover service that travels down from the car park to the Red Lion Pub at the bottom of the hill. Amenities such public toilets, shops, pubs and restaurants can be found in the village itself. The beach sits next to the South West Coast Path, with the section between Clovelly and Mouthmill being one of its most spectacular parts of the walking trail.
Sugary and Castle Cove
Overlooked by Dartmouth Castle, Castle Cove is a small, relatively wild, sand and pebble beach. Backed by Rocks, trees and cliffs it looks out onto the mouth of the River Dart. There are no signposts so it is easy to miss as it is hidden by trees. The closest parking place is at Dartmouth Castle, which is approx. 100 metres from the beach. The castle is a historic fortress and has toilets and a café. The beach is a 5/10 minute walk from the castle down a steep path with steps. There are a few other coves along the path including Deadmans Cove, and Ladies Cove, which adds to the excitement. Dogs are currently welcome on the beach all year round.
Watergate Bay
At low tide the beach at Watergate Bay, 3 miles from Newquay, becomes a vast expanse of unbroken golden sand backed by high cliffs. The beach is set between the cliffs Trevelgue Head to the south and Stem Point in the north and the coast path here is well worth exploring. As with all the beaches in Newquay Bay, Watergate provides some good waves, that, combined with it’s size and location, has made it very popular with local surf schools. The Extreme Academy offers a range of “extreme sports” including surfing, kitesurfing and kite buggying. Amenities include a pub, restaurants, cafes and toilets and dogs are welcome all year round.
